My family eats so many tortillas its not even funny! We love beef tacos, chicken tacos, even chicken enchiladas and this ground beef enchiladas recipe. Unfortunately, buying tortillas can get expensive.

These homemade flour tortillas taste better and loaded with flavor. These tortillas would be perfect to serve with all your Cinco De Mayo Recipes.

Why This Recipe Works

This is the best flour tortilla recipe for me because it doesn’t require “masa” or other uncommon ingredients. You probably already have everything on hand to make them. The only question now is, what will you eat these delicious tortillas with?

Once you make homemade flour tortilla recipe, you will not buy store bought again.  They are so easy to make and made with simple ingredients.

Ingredients

  • All Purpose Flour
  • Baking Powder
  • Sea Salt
  • Butter Flavored Crisco or non-flavored vegetable shortening
  • Warm Water (Approximately)

Step by Step Instructions

  • Step 1 – In a large bowl, add flour, baking powder and salt. Whisk together to combine all ingredients.
  • Step 2 – Add shortening to the dry ingredients and mix well. The easiest way to do this is either with two knives or a pastry blender. You’ll want your mixture to look like small beads once its all mixed.
  • Step 3 – Slowly add the water. Start with about ½ cup of water and continue to mix and add water until you have a nice tacky dough. You will probably need just under ¾ cup of water. Roll dough into a ball on a floured surface.
  • Step 4 – Cover your dough ball and allow to rest for 30 – 45 minutes.
  • Step 5 – Cut the dough into 8 equal portions wedges. Roll each wedge into a small ball with a rolling pin.
  • Step 6 – Lightly flour a surface and roll the small dough ball into a thin circular (or mostly circular) shape.

  • Step 7 – Place a skillet over a medium heat. Allow the skillet to heat up for about 5 minutes before using. Do not use any spray, grease or butter in your skillet – this is a “dry” cooking technique.

  • Step 8 – Place your rolled out dough in the hot skillet and cook for approximately 30 seconds on each side. Repeat with each of the other dough balls.

Recipe Tips

  • Combining Ingredients – Add in the shortening to the flour mixture until small beads appear. Then slowly add in water until the dough is tacky in a bowl of a stand mixer. Then roll dough into a ball on a floured work surface.
  • Dough Rest – Allow the dough to rest covered with a clean kitchen towel in a bowl.
  • Cooking Tortillas – When you are ready to cook the tortillas, you will cook them in a clean skillet over medium-high heat. No need to spray cooking spray or grease with butter. Cook tortillas for about 30 seconds or until golden brown spots appear.
