How to Make Salted Caramel Apple Pie
- Step 1 – Prepare the Oven – Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F and chill the pie crust while you prepare the filling.
Step 2 – Season the Apples – Place the apple slices in a large mixing bowl. Add in the lemon juice, sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg. Toss to thoroughly coat the apples with the seasonings. Set aside.
Step 3 – Lay Pie Crust in Pie Plate – Place one of the chilled pie dough in a 9 inch pie dish.
Step 4 – Add the Pie Filling – Then fill the pie crust with the apples and drizzle the top of the apples with ½ cup of the salted caramel sauce.
Step 5 – Prepare the Top Crust – Then lay out the other pie crust on a floured work surface. Use a pizza cutter, sharp knife or pastry wheel to cut the pie crust into 16 strips that are approximately ½ inch thick.
Step 6 – Make a Weave with the Crust Strips – Then carefully thread the strips over and under one another to make a weave topping on top of the pie. Trim off any excess overhang on the pie. Then crimp the edges of the dough with a fork or with your fingers.
Step 7 – Top with egg and Sugar – Gently brush the top of the lattice topping with the lightly beaten egg wash and sprinkle the sugar on top. Cover the crust with foil or a pie crust shield. I like to place the pie on a baking sheet. Bake the pie at 400 degrees F for 30 minutes.
- Step 8 – Remove the foil or pie shield and reduce the oven temperature to 375 degrees F. Then bake the pie for 20 minutes to 30 more minutes until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling (a small knife inserted into the middle of the pie comes out clean).
- Step 9 – Cool Pie – Allow the pie to cool completely on a wire rack at room temperature for at least 4 hours.
- Step 10 – Serve and Enjoy – Drizzle the remaining salted caramel sauce on the pie when serving and enjoy!
Recipe Tips
- Pie Crust – You can make homemade pie crust or use the premade pie crust. Either way the crust will be delicious and flaky.
- Pie Crust Design – Since this is a double pie crust pie get creative with your top layer. We did the weave method but it would perfect to cut out leaves or apples with cookie cutter and place on top.
- Salted Caramel Sauce – We used store bought caramel sauce. But you can make Homemade Caramel Sauce with this simple recipe.
- Apples – We used granny smith apples for this recipe. But use what you prefer. We think the tartness of the granny smith apples pairs perfectly with the flavors of the caramel sauce.
- Make Ahead – We love to make pies ahead of time. We think they taste even better when they have had time to rest and blend all the flavors.
- Brown Sugar – You can substitute in brown sugar for the white sugar.
- Pie Crust Edges – To keep the pie crust edges from burning, you can cover the edges with a piece of foil. Place a piece of foil under the pie plate and then wrap the foil around the edges to cover the crust.
- Keep Crust Cold – While preparing your crust, make sure that it doesn’t get warm. It makes it easier to work with when it is cool.
- Omit Caramel – If you are not a fan of the salted caramel flavor, you can just leave it out. The pie will still be very delicious and flavorful.
Topping Ideas
- Whipped cream – We like to make homemade whipped cream. It is very simple to make.
- Reddi Whip – This is an easy topping if you need to grab something fast.
- Cool Whip – Try this in vanilla flavor.
- Caramel Sauce – This is so decadent drizzled on top with some sugar.
- Powdered Sugar – Sprinkle powdered sugar on top of the apple pie.
- Ice cream – Vanilla ice cream is delicious and perfect on the slice of salted caramel apple pie.
