Variations Ideas:

  • Cake Mix – I used Betty Crocker Rainbow Chip Cake mix, but you can use whatever flavor you want to.
  • Cupcakes – This recipe would even work making into cupcakes.

Step by Step Instructions:

  • Step 1 – Bake the cake according to the package directions.
Crumbling cake in the bowl

Step 2 – In a large bowl crumble the cake with your hands.

Adding in the frosting into the crumbled cake

Step 3 – Then simply mix 2/3 to ¾ of a tub of Frosting until your mix is one thick ball of “dough”.

Placing the prepared cake pops onto the baking sheet

Step 4 – Shape the dough mixture into mine cube shaped. Place your shaped cake pops on a wax paper lined cookie sheet. Then insert the lollipop stick into each cake pop and freeze.

Dipping the square cake pops into the melted green chocolate

Step 5 – While your pops are in the freezer, melt the green candy melts according to the package directions. Then dip the cake pops into the melted mixture.

  • Step 6 – Lastly, I simply drizzled some melted milk chocolate over the top to add a little more color. Once these are fully assembled, there is no need to keep them refrigerated. The chocolate stays hard and the cake inside stays moist. Oh the joy of a cake pop!

Recipe Tips:

  • Let Cake Cool – Once the cake is done baking, let it cool off so it is not too hot for your hands (about 15 minutes).
  • Crumbling Cake – We like to crumble the cake with our hands and we even let the kids help. This way the cake crumbles into fine crumbs.
  • Adding Frosting – I add just enough frosting to the crumbled cake so that I can pick up the mixture with my hands and it is not too sticky.
  • After Dipping Cake Pops – Tap the stick on the side of the bowl to remove excess chocolate and then allow them to dry upright. The chocolate dries fast so you’ll want to work quickly at this point. For my cake pop stand I simply used a floral foam block and covered it in black tissue paper.

Instructions

  • Bake the cake according to the package directions. Once the cake is done baking, let it cool off so it is not too hot for your hands (about 15 minutes).
  • Get a large bowl and crumble the cake.
  • Then simply mix 2/3 to ¾ of a tub of Frosting (again I used Betty Crocker vanilla) until your mix is one thick ball of “dough”. I add just enough frosting to the crumbled cake so that I can pick up the mixture with my hands and it is not too sticky.
  • Then simply pinch off bite-size or larger pieces and form them into your desired shape. Since I was making these for a Minecraft party, I made mine cube shaped. Place your shaped cake pops on a wax paper lined cookie sheet.
  • Insert lollipop sticks and place shaped cake pops in the freezer so it is easier to coat them with chocolate later.
  • While your pops are in the freezer, melt the green candy melts according to the package directions. Once your chocolate is completely melted, dip the cake pops in the melted mixture, tap the stick on the side of the bowl to remove excess chocolate and then allow them to dry upright.
  • When all of my cake pops were done, I simply drizzled some melted milk chocolate over the top to add a little more color.
