The next time you are craving biscuits from Kentucky Fried Chicken, make these copycat KFC biscuits easily at home. It is a very easy copycat recipe and takes hardly anytime at all.

Everyone will go crazy over these soft and fluffy biscuits. This delicious side is perfect for Sunday dinner but easy enough for any meal of the day. These butter flavored biscuits will be a hit and they taste amazing. Especially on a cold winter morning.

What Are KFC biscuits Made Of?

You don’t need a ton of ingredients to make these biscuits and absolutely no yeast required. This recipe uses all purpose flour instead of self rising flour.

There is lots of butter in this recipe instead of vegetable shortening which makes them super delicious.

Ingredients

Ingredients for KFC biscuits - flour, baking powder, baking soda, cream of tartar, sugar, salt, salted butter, buttermilk, melted butter
  • Flour – We used all purpose flour but you can substitute with whole wheat flour
  • Baking Powder and Baking Soda – If you are out, check out The Best Baking Soda Substitutes
  • Butter – Use cold salted butter that is diced
  • Cold Buttermilk – You can substitute with whole milk

Variation Ideas

  • Buttermilk. It is ok if you don’t have this ingredient. You can use a tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar with a cup of whole milk. Allow it to sit on the counter for 15 minutes.
  • Air Fryer. You can cook the biscuits in the air fryer instead of the oven. Preheat to 375 and cook for 10 minutes. Make sure to coat the bottoms of the biscuits with oil so they will not stick. The biscuits will need to be flipped half way through the cooking time.

How to Make KFC Biscuits

  • Step 1 – Preheat the oven. It needs to be set to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 
Combining the dry ingredients

Step 2 – Combine the dry ingredients. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the dry ingredients: flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1 teaspoons salt, baking powder, baking soda and cream of tartar.

Step 3 – Add the butter. Then slice the cold butter into small pieces and cut the butter into the dry ingredients with a pastry cutter, knife or pastry blender.  Continue to blend together until it resembles coarse crumbs into flour mixture. Then stir in the ¾ cup Buttermilk into the bowl just until a dough forms. Divide dough then turn dough onto floured surface.

Step 4 – Roll the dough. On a lightly flour board surface, roll the dough out until it’s approximately ½ inch thick and about 8-inch circle.  Then sprinkle the top of the dough with flour so that the cutter doesn’t stick to the dough.

Step 5 – Cut the biscuits. Use a 2-inch biscuit cutter or the top of a round glass to cut the biscuits out of the dough on a lightly floured surface.  Do not twist the biscuit cutter when cutting out the biscuits.  Just gently shake the cutter or glass so that the biscuit falls out.

  • Step 6 – Place on a baking sheet. Then place cut biscuits on the ungreased baking sheet. 
  • Step 7 – Bake the biscuits. Bake for 14 to 17 minutes until the top of the biscuits are lightly golden brown.  
  • Step 8 – Allow the biscuits to cool. After the cooking time, let the biscuits cool for 5 minutes, then brush tops of the biscuits with the melted butter and serve! 

What Can I Use Instead of a Biscuit Cutter?

If you do not have a biscuit cutter, you can still easily make this copycat biscuit recipes. The best option is to cut the biscuits with a glass cup that has a round top.

How Do You Make Biscuits Fluffy?

Combine the wet and dry ingredients until just combined. Overmixing will prevent the biscuits from being fluffy.

Also, ensure the oven is preheated and hot before baking the biscuits. They need high heat to properly cook and turn out fluffy.

How to Store Biscuits

Store the leftover KFC biscuit recipe in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. 

How to Reheat

Reheat in the microwave for a few seconds until heated though.
Frozen biscuits previously cooked can be heated in the oven for 15 minutes at 350 degrees. You can also put foil over the tops of the biscuits to prevent them from getting too brown.

How to Freeze Biscuits

First, allow the biscuits to completely cool. Then place inside a freezer bag or container. I suggest putting a layer of wax paper in between the biscuits to prevent them from sticking. You can also wrap the biscuits in foil before placing in the storage container. They can be frozen up to 2 to 3 months.

  • Use a 2.5 inch or 3 inch biscuit cutter or the top of a round glass to cut the biscuits out of the dough.  Do not twist the biscuit cutter when cutting out the biscuits.  Just gently shake the cutter or glass so that the biscuit falls out.
  • Then place the cut out biscuits on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake for 14-17 minutes until the top of the biscuits are lightly golden brown.
  • After the cooking time, let the biscuits cool for 5 minutes, then top them with the melted butter and serve!
