How do you cook Chicken Breast in the instant pot?

We eat a lot of chicken and I love to cook it in the instant pot. You can use frozen chicken and still have dinner ready in a matter of minutes.

The instant pot cooks the chicken to perfection and is so tender and delicious!

Instant Pot Recommendation:

I am using an 8 quart Instant pot but you can use a 6 quart. I personally have an Instant Pot and so far I am loving it.

You can find the Instant pot on sale here.  Itโ€™s really changed dinner time around here.

If you have been putting off trying an instant pot, I highly recommend going ahead and biting the bullet. I love using the pressure cooker when I donโ€™t have much time.

How do you make Ranch Chicken in a crock pot?

No worries if you do not have a pressure cooker. You can try Crock Pot Creamy Ranch Chicken Recipe. We love using our crock pot. I love to come home with my house smelling so good with this complete ranch chicken recipe.

However you decide to cook this, it will be amazing!

Ingredients:

  • Chicken Breasts
  • Potatoes
  • Baby Carrots
  • Ranch Seasoning Mix
  • Cream of Chicken Soup
  • Milk

How to make Creamy Ranch Chicken in the Instant Pot:

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the milk, cream of chicken soup and the ranch dressing mix.
  • Place the water in the bottom of the instant pot. Then add in the chicken, potatoes and carrots.
  • Pour the cream of chicken soup mixture over the top of these ingredients in the instant pot.
  • Seal the instant pot and pressure cook on high pressure for 20 minutes with a quick release. Cook times will vary.
  • Then serve the chicken, potatoes and carrots with the sauce poured over the top from the instant pot and enjoy!
  • The recipe calls for 1 cup of water but you can add more cups of water if you find it is too thick. Also, it is totally optional but you can sprinkle a little shredded cheddar cheese on the chicken before serving.

You can use frozen chicken breasts if you prefer or forgot to take some out of the freezer. It is a great recipe and one of our favorite dinner recipes because it is so easy.

Variations:

  • Add other Vegetables – Try mixing it up with the vegetables. Green beans are yummy with the chicken.
  • Use Chicken Thighs – You can use chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts.
  • Change the Potatoes – Try using red potatoes.
  • Change the Seasoning – Try other seasonings like garlic powder or whatever your family likes.
  • Add in Chicken Broth – If you like a thinner sauce, add in some chicken broth.
  • Make Mashed Potatoes instead – Omit the potatoes and serve this recipe over mashed potatoes or rice. Yum!

We love simple recipes like this and everyone looks forward to when this recipe is on the menu plan for that week.  Plus, if you try some of these different ideas it is easy to make this recipe many different ways.

My family thinks I am coming up with lots of new recipes when really they are eating the same thing but with just a few differences. I love to do this with recipes they love and everyone enjoys.

What to serve with Ranch Chicken:

  • Easy Homemade Dinner Rolls – These rolls are perfect to dip into the yummy ranch sauce. You will want the rolls to get every last bit of that delicious sauce.
  • Steamed BroccoliThis is my favorite way to cook broccoli. It is a very quick side dish.
  • Green Salad – Since this one pot meal is already hearty, we like to serve with a green salad.

Make it a Freezer Meal:

This is a great meal to make ahead of time so all you have to do is toss and go in the Instant Pot. Just put the chicken in a freezer bag. Then mix together the sauce and pour in the bag over the chicken.

Freeze until ready to cook. Do not add the potatoes and carrots until you are ready to put in the slow cooker. Cook as normal and enjoy. This is a great way to cut down on a portion of the prep time.

I like to cook one batch and freeze another. It really is not any more work since you have all of the ingredients out. Plus, you will have another easy meal for later.

I’m so sorry for the confusion. I have recently updated this recipe and I no longer use cream cheese in this recipe so I have removed that from the post.

A little confused. Says cream cheese is used but I don’t see it listed in the ingredients.

  3. Carrie Barnard says:

    I hope you love it!

  4. Dava says:

    Trying today

  5. Carrie Barnard says:

Yes, chicken tenders will work great. I recommend using the lower end of the cook time with chicken tenders as they will cook quicker. Thanks!

  6. Karen says:

Can I use chicken tenders for this recipe?

  7. Carrie Barnard says:

I leave them whole but you can cut them into pieces too.

  8. Lynn says:

Do you cut the chicken into pieces or put the whole breast in?

  9. Carrie Barnard says:

I love the idea of serving with biscuits.

  10. Carole Audley says:

This was absolutely delicious….will definitely make it again. Was like a chicken stew. Made biscuits to go with it.

We have since updated the recipe and it no longer includes cream cheese.

  12. Melissa says:

Iโ€™ve seen a couple of questions about cream cheese but do not see cream cheese in the recipe?

  13. Falon says:

The kids loved it and they are pretty picky! I didnโ€™t have potatoes so I just made it with the baby carrots and it turned out great! Will be adding this into the dinner rotation.

  14. Ashley Mcdowell says:

I’m confused, why is everyone asking about cream cheese in the comments? I don’t see anything about cream cheese in the recipe..

  15. Kaylon Reichman says:

Adding this easy IP recipe to our monthly rotation! Kids loved it.

  16. Carrie says:

Sorry, I’ll clarify that in the recipe. 8 ounces of cream cheese is used in this recipe.

  17. Ajax Dahgue says:

How much cream cheese is in “a block”? I can’t find it in any of my cooking information. I buy cream cheese at Costco which is in a block shape, but weighs 3lbs.

    Thanks

  18. Carrie says:

Hey Emily – If the sauce is too thin, switch the instant pot to the sautรฉ setting and then combine 2 Tbsp of cornstarch with 1/4 cup of cold water. Whisk this mixture into the sauce (I remove all the chicken and vegetables from the Instant Pot) on the sautรฉ setting and heat until the sauce has thickened. I hope this helps and I hope you enjoyed the recipe.

  19. Emily Haugan says:

I used only 2 chicken breast but my sauce was thin. What can I do to fix that

  20. Carrie says:

Aubrey – I would add 3-5 minutes to the cook time for frozen chicken breasts depending on how large they are. Thank you!

  21. Aubrey says:

Would you change the time for frozen chicken breasts?

  22. Carrie says:

I would cook it for 25 minutes on high pressure for only 2 chicken breasts. Thank you!

  23. Brittney N Dounouk says:

I only have 2 chicken breast would the time change?

  24. Carrie says:

I cook this one on high pressure with a quick release. Thank you!

  25. Deanna says:

What pressure setting? Manual, meat? And natural release?

  26. Melissa says:

How would the times change if I used chicken that I precooked last night?

  27. Michelle says:

If I wanted to use cream of chicken instead of cream cheese would this be ok? If so how much should I use?

  28. Carrie says:

I’m not sure about the Ultra but I always recommend that you put the liquid from the recipe on the bottom of the instant to prevent the burn notice or any burning on the recipe. Thank you!

  29. Emily says:

I tried this recipe and it burned in my instapot ultra. I set pressure cook to 30 minutes on low and left it – any pointers if I were to try again? Do you know if the instapot and instapot ultra have different cook times?

I tweaked this recipe just a bit. I added 1 finely diced onion; 1 Tablespoon of Dry Rosemary and changed the water to 2 cups Better than Bouillon Chicken Base. It really made it taste fantastic. I also used the chicken/meat icon on my XL Power Pro Pressure Cooker for 30 minutes; but did a natural release for 10. I also thicken the sauce/gravy with 1/4 cup water and 1 heaping Tablespoon corn starch. It turned out fantastic. I was able to freeze three of the servings to eat at later dates since there is only me that I am cooking for.
