Variations Ideas

  • Brown Gravy Mix – For even more flavor add in a packet of brown gravy mix.
  • Seasoning – Feel free to add in fresh herbs such as dried thyme or rosemary. You can also add in garlic powder, Worcestershire Sauce and a bay leaf.

How to Make Beef Tips in the Instant Pot

  • Step 1 – Place the Instant pot on sauté setting.
  • Step 2 – Add stew meat and onions to the instant pot.  Cook until the stew meat is brown (approximately 3-4 minutes).
  • Step 3 – Cancel the sauté setting. Pour the beef stock or beef broth, cream of mushroom soup, and seasonings over the beef.
  • Step 4 – Add the lid and make sure the valve is set to sealing.
  • Step 5 – Press the manual button and set the pressure for 15 minutes. If you are using an 8 quart instant pot, then do high pressure.
  • Step 6 – Once it is finished, you can do a quick release and remove the lid.
  • Step 7 – In a small bowl whisk together the cornstarch and the water until smoothed.
  • Step 8 – Mix into the pot. Set the sauté button again and bring the beef to a boil.
  • Step 9 – Allow it to boil for a few minutes until the gravy thickens slightly.

Expert Tips

  • Instant Pot Recommendations – You will need an electric pressure cooker for this recipe. I am using an 8 quart Instant pot but you can use a 6 quart if you prefer.
  • Gravy Consistency – We made a cornstarch slurry to thicken the gravy but if you like it thinner, you do not have to add this step.
  • Stew MeatIf you are cutting the beef yourself, we recommend cutting in about the same bite-sized pieces. This ensures that it cooks about the same time.

I used pork tips instead of beef, because that’s what was in the freezer, and I seasoned more generously, because I’m a Louisiana girl. Otherwise, I followed the recipe. This was so good! So easy! It will be in regular rotation at our house.

  3. Carrie Barnard says:

    Yes you can.

  4. Renee Blinya says:

Can I add a can of mushrooms?

I made this tonight for my family and actually doubled it. Everyone raved for it and all ate seconds. I used the better than Boullion beef, that adds a rich flavor. Also I used venison instead of beef which no one could even tell. I did not use any oil to brown the meat and onions and still turned out perfect. I served this with mashed potatoes. One thing to watch is when adding the cornstarch and water to watch the bubbling and not burn your arm like I did lol.

My family all has requested that I make this again and this will definitely hit the dinner rotation.

Thanks for such an easy, delicious recipe!!

  12. Linda says:

This was easy to make and delicious. The gravy was thick and rich and begged to be put over mashed potatoes or rice. I’ve used both and I can’t decide which I like better. I cut the recipe in half because there are only two of us. We enjoyed it for two nights and still had enough left over to share with my neighbor who recently lost his wife. He loved it too. The beef was SO tender. Like melting your mouth tender. I will definitely be making this again.

Hi Sarah – This is eatingonadime.com. The club is at lazydaycookingclub.com. Log in to that website with your email and password and you’ll be able to pull up on the information from there! Welcome!

  20. Sarah says:

I’m confused. I’m new to this site/club. How do I save this and other recipes to my favorites? And then how do I add things to my grocery list?

  21. Carrie says:

Yes, you can add 1 Tbsp of oil to brown the beef in. It depends on how fatty the beef is. If the beef is fatty, than it may not be needed. I usually watch closely and add if it’s sticking to the bottom of the instant pot.

  22. Enola Pickard says:

Several other beef tips recipes use oil to brown the beef. You did not mention oil. Do you brown the beef and onions with or without oil?

  23. Carrie says:

I would add 5 minutes to the cook time if using frozen beef versus thawed out beef. So I would cook this one on high pressure for 20 minutes with a quick release and you wouldn’t be able to brown at the beginning but I would still taste great!

  24. Kourtney says:

Just double checking. This recipe is the same cook time with frozen beef?

  25. Carrie says:

I just leave it on the top and then mix it in when it’s done. Thank you!

  26. Sonya Claar says:

Do you mix the cream of mushroom and beef broth in with the beef or just leave it on top unmixed?

  27. Robyn Rosiles says:

My family loves this recipe! I make it often and it’s become my go to when I have extra stew meat. It’s so delicious and easy.

  28. Carrie says:

I’m so sorry for the confusion. I brown the stew meat with the onion before adding in the other ingredients. I have corrected the post and the recipe. Thank you so much!

  29. LadyDi4613 says:

She doesn’t say about when to put the one onion in, but I am putting it with my meat when browning. She does talk about using diced green onion(s) as a garnish when answering in a comment, but I think that green onion is used to sprinkle around on top of meat after cooking. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks for the great recipe! I love the beef stew one too!!

  30. Victoria says:

I still don’t know when to add the “1 onion diced”. Guess I’ll just guess on that? Fingers crossed.

  31. Dani says:

Do the onions get sautéed with the beef?

  32. Wendy says:

    Hi there,
The recipe calls for 1 diced onion. Is this sautéd in the beginning with the beef?
    Thank you!

  33. Carrie says:

No, the cook time would stay the same regardless of the amount. The instant pot will adjust the pressure accordingly. Thank you!

  34. Allison Carter says:

If you halved the recipe using only 1lb of meat would you cook for less time as well?

  35. Stacia Mitchell says:

I need time settings for 8qt instapot and how much water it has 2/3 or 1/2 settings inside silver insert.and what setting I am new to this just cooking beef tips and mashed potatoes seasoned with onion powder and Tony’s.

  36. Sherry says:

Made this tonight it was so good! I did have to cook it for 30 min in my 6 qt IP…this is a keeper!

  37. Carrie says:

I would use the same time and pressure for a 6 qt Instant Pot as well. Thank you.

  38. Branndy says:

What is the time and pressure for a 6 qt. Instant Pot? The recipe only specifies for an 8qt. Thanks!

  39. Carrie says:

    Great to hear. Thank you!

  40. Jada says:

It was so quick and easy. I couldn’t believe how good and tender the beef was! The gravy was awesome too

  41. Carrie says:

Ann – The green onions are an optional garnish – I will update the post. Thank you!

  42. Ann says:

You have onions in the ingredients but you do not have them in the directions!!!!
    Add them when??
