How to Make Sweetened Condensed Milk

Step 1 – Stir the milk and sugar together. I like to use a large sauce pan for this. Heat this mixture and bring it to a simmer.

Add in butter and vanilla into saucepan

Step 2 – Once the water content has reduced, remove the pan from the heat. Add the butter and vanilla to the pan. Stir to combine.

  • Step 3 – Let this cool completely. You will need to store this in the fridge and it lasts up to a week.

  • Combining the Ingredients – As you are heating the ingredients together in a medium saucepan continue to stir. Make sure to scrape the bottom of the pan to make sure all the ingredients are mixed together.
  • Cool Completely – Before storing or using the homemade sweetened condensed milk, make sure to has cooled completely for best results.

Make sure to use an airtight container to store the mixture.  It will last up to a week if stored properly. My favorite way to store is in a mason jar. They are easy to reuse, inexpensive and I normally always have several on hand!

Instructions

  • Stir together the milk and sugar in a large sauce pan. Heat over medium heat and bring the mixture to a low simmer. Simmer uncovered until the mixture is reduced in half (20-30 minutes) whisking frequently to keep the milk from burning.
  • Once the milk is reduce, remove the pan from the heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract.
  • Allow the mixture to cool completely and then use with your favorite recipes or store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
