Step 4 – Add the water or broth to the crock pot with the seasonings (minced garlic, onion powder, salt and pepper). Make sure that the liquid covers the beans by 2 inches over the top of them. Cook the beans in the crock pot on high for 3-4 hours until the beans are tender.

  • Step 5 – Once the beans are tender, drain off any excess liquid and then the beans are ready to serve and enjoy!

Expert Tips

  • Soaking Beans – I prefer to soak the beans as they cook with a better texture and soaking them reduces the gas produced by the beans during digestion
  • Preparing Beans – Before soaking beans, we recommend removing any debris or damaged beans.
  • Cooking Beans – If you prefer to pre-soak your beans, we recommend draining the water from the beans. We like to cook the beans in clean water.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long do Dried Beans Take to Cook in a Crock Pot?

Cooking time will vary as it will depend on the type of bean that you use and if you pre soak the beans. Generally it will take about 6 to 8 hours on low in the slow cooker.

Is it Better to Cook Beans on Low or High?

You can cook the beans on low for 6-8 hours but I find that the beans get more tender by cooking on high in the crock pot. You can cook the beans in the crock pot without soaking overnight but they will take 5-6 hours on high.

How to Store Leftover Cooked Beans

Store leftover beans in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will last about 3-5 days. This is a great recipe to meal prep with.

Can I Freeze Cooked Beans?

Yes, you can freeze cooked beans in a freezer safe container. See Can You Freeze Cooked Beans for even more tips.
