  • Preheat oven to 350 ยบ F.
  • Using a standing mixer, combine dry ingredients mix, oil and eggs until combined.
  • Divide the batter into two separate bowls. (I use a large bowl for each color)
  • Mix red food coloring into one bowl
  • Mix green food coloring into the second bowl
  • Take about 2 tbsp of red color of dough and 1 tbsp of the green dough and form into small sized balls.

  • Pour the sanding sugar into a bowl.
  • Roll cookie dough into the white sanding sugar.
  • Place cookie dough balls about 2 inches apart on a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Lightly push each cookie dough ball down so that it becomes a thick but flat disk on cookie sheets.
  • Bake for 7 to 8 minutes. The allow the cookies to rest for 8-10 minutes on the baking sheet.
  • Then move the sugar cookies to a wire rack to cool completely before enjoying!

It is optional but you can add small red hearts to the cookies if you like.  I love adding the heart as it represetns the Grinch’s heart that was 2 sizes too small.

Also, chilling the dough is helpful if you find the dough is too soft.

You are going to love these cookies!

How much food coloring do you put in the cookies?

Once you have the two bowls with each having their own cookie dough, I would start with about ½ teaspoon of each color poured into the dough.

Once you have the dough mix together and you want it darker, you can always add more food coloring.

Grinch Crinkle soft and chewy cookies would also be fun for a cookie exchange. If you participate in a Christmas cookie exchange, these would be just darling to bring.

They are so festive with the red and green that they would be so pretty at any holiday party. Every time I get invited my friends are always excited to see what I bring. They are always the first cookie gone.

Variations for Grinch Cookies:

  • If you have the time, you can make Grinch cookies from scratch using butters and sugars, vanilla extract and baking soda. Then get a Grinch cookie cutter to make these sugar cookies complete. We prefer the easy method above because it is so child friendly.
  • If you can’t find the candy hearts, you can use a chocolate chip or heart sprinkles instead.
  • You can also use a red hot candy on top of the cookie
  • You can also dust the cookies with confectioners sugar instead once they are at room temperature.
  • Try rolling the cookie dough in powder sugar before baking, it will give the crinkle look. After the dough is rolled in powdered sugar, place them on the baking sheet. Then bake accordingly to the recipe.
  • You can even try making Grinch Faces on your cookies.

Also, make sure to have a good baking sheet.  I just had to replace several of mine and thankfully found several on sale on Amazon. It is super important to use good baking tools so your finished product will be just how you want it!

We have so much fun creating these little goodies. Yum!
