Everyone loves pizza but takeout gets expensive. Something we have been making a lot lately is this Pita Pizza Recipe when they craving hits. It is so easy, frugal and really delicious. You might also like our flatbread pizza recipe or Tortilla Pizza Recipe for another easy main dish recipe.

Everyone gets to make their own pizza and it is fun too. My kids love to make these and everyone can choose their favorite toppings. I love veggie pizza, my husband loves buffalo chicken and the kids like cheese and pepperoni. Pita bread pizza taste great and they make it super easy for everyone to get the pizza they love most.

Why We Love Pita Pizza

We love to make this pita pizza recipe for lunch and dinner because it is so easy. It is also fun to make for parties and every child can make their own pizza.

Everyone enjoys putting on the sauce and cheese. You can put out lots of different toppings so everyone can choose what they like. Top with fresh ingredients, bake and enjoy! Add a little fresh basil and red pepper flakes. Yum!

You can use wheat pitas or anything you prefer to make pita bread pizzas. It really is a fun meal and tasty too. Plus, we love how inexpensive it is as well.

Ingredients

Ingredients - Pita Bread, shredded Mozzarella Cheese, pizza sauce, and slice pepperoni
  • Pita Breads – Use pizza crust that you prefer. We have also used whole wheat pita crust for a delicious variation.
  • Pizza Sauce – We like this homemade pizza sauce. You can also use Easy Marinara Sauce, tomato sauce or Pesto Sauce.
  • Shredded Mozzarella Cheese – Use any type of shredded cheese that you prefer
  • Pepperonis – Add your favorite toppings such as fresh veggies

Pita Pizza Variations

  • Buffalo Chicken Pita Pizza – In a bowl combine 2 cups Cooked Chicken, ½ cup Buffalo Sauce and 1 Tbsp Ranch Dressing Seasoning Mix. Spread softened 4 oz. Cream Cheese on pita bread then top with the chicken mixture and mozzarella cheese and buffalo sauce. Then bake for a delicious variations.
  • BBQ Chicken Pita Pizza – In a bowl combine 2 cups cooked chicken, 1 cup Barbecue Sauce, 1 tsp Salt and Black Pepper, 2 tsp Paprika and 1 tsp Cayenne. Then combine ½ cup Barbecue Sauce, ½ cup Mayonnaise, 1 tsp Paprika and ½ tsp Cayenne in a small bowl. Spread this sauce mixture on the pita bread and top with the chicken mixture, then sprinkle with mozzarella cheese and sliced red onion then bake.
  • Greek Pita Pizza – Use a gluten-free pita bread to make Greek Pita Pizza by adding cherry tomatoes and feta cheese.
  • Add Fresh Herbs – For even more flavor, we like to add in fresh herbs such as ½ teaspoon of minced garlic or oregano to the pizza sauce.

How to Make Pizza with Pita Bread

  • Step 1 – First, preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. We even drizzle a ½ teaspoon of olive oil before adding the sauce.

Step 2 – Place the pita breads on baking sheets. Spoon 2 Tbsp of the Pizza Sauce on each pita.

Step 3 – Then place ½ cup of the shredded mozzarella cheese on each pita.

Step 4 – The top with 6 pieces of pepperonis on each pita.

Step 5 – Bake uncovered for 10-12 minutes until the pita is browned slightly and the cheese is melted.

Recipe Tips

  • Baking Sheet – We recommend using a baking sheet large enough to hold pita pizza to ensure that that everything melts easily.
  • Cooking Time – Baking the pizza will vary depending on the toppings you use and the type of crust you use. Watch the pizza closely so the pizza does not burn.
  • Serving – Allow the pizza to cool for a few minutes before serving.
