Recipe Tips

  • Slow Cooker Recommendations – Check out these The 6 Best Multicookers of 2024 if you are needing a new crockpot. Some of these slow cooker can just do everything in the same pot. We love these because you can brown the meat in the same slow cooker for recipes that call for that.
  • Browning Steak – For the best results, we recommend browning the steak in a skillet on the stove. This gives the steak the best flavor.
  • Cutting Vegetables – We recommend cutting the onions and peppers in large pieces. This allows them not to get mushy as it slow cooks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Use a Different Cut of Meat?

The recipe calls for round steak but you can use beef chuck steak as well. Really any type of inexpensive steak will work.

Can You Over Cook Meat in a Slow Cooker?

Yes. Cooking meat too long can cause it to become tough and have the opposite effect. You want to cook it long enough to make it tender but not so long that it gets tough.

Can You Put Raw Steak in a Slow Cooker?

You certainly can. This is another way that the crock pot helps to save time and make dinner easy.

How to Store Leftover Swiss Steak

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The steak will last about 3-4 days. When ready to serve, reheat in the microwave.

Do not drain the tomatoes. Add all the tomatoes and juice to the crock pot.

  2. Jeff says:

Do you drain the tomatoes or add the juice and all to the crockpot?

  3. Carrie Barnard says:

Michele – I do not put anything in the flour first. I coat the steaks with the flour and then brown both sides. Then just add them to the crock pot with the other ingredients.

  4. Michele says:

How do you prep the steak? Did you put anything in the flour first?

I love this recipe – so quick and easy! I like to use cube steak because it’s got a texture that allows more absorption of the flavors in the sauce. Quick and easy for busy days.

Yes I think that would work great.

  9. Rikk says:

Could I substitute tomato sauce for the tomatoes? Tomato haters in the house.

This was an excellent recipe. I did change up a few things to make it more flavorful. After browning the steaks, I poured the broth in the same pan to deglaze along with the peppers garlic, Worcestershire and onions. Let them cook for about 5 minutes then transferred it all, along with the diced tomatoes in the crockpot.served it over mashed potatoes! No leftovers! Thanks for a Stella recipe. This is definitely a keeper.

  12. Lisa says:

This is now my “go to” Swiss steak recipe. Me H?E?B has a frozen fajita mix with bell peppers and onions and I use that to save on prep time. Used to cook on stove top and had to watch it for hours for the meat to be tender.

For your readers I would like to say this is the best swiss steak recipe you can ever use!! It seems to take me a little longer for the prep time but I do it the same way you do. I’m not a fast cook but I think I’m a good one. You just can’t go wrong with this recipe!
