Frequently Asked Questions
The recipe calls for round steak but you can use beef chuck steak as well. Really any type of inexpensive steak will work.
Yes. Cooking meat too long can cause it to become tough and have the opposite effect. You want to cook it long enough to make it tender but not so long that it gets tough.
You certainly can. This is another way that the crock pot helps to save time and make dinner easy.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The steak will last about 3-4 days. When ready to serve, reheat in the microwave.

Do not drain the tomatoes. Add all the tomatoes and juice to the crock pot.
Do you drain the tomatoes or add the juice and all to the crockpot?
Michele – I do not put anything in the flour first. I coat the steaks with the flour and then brown both sides. Then just add them to the crock pot with the other ingredients.
How do you prep the steak? Did you put anything in the flour first?
Found it. !! My Mom made the Best Swiss Steak but never used a recipe. I finally found your’s and I can tell by the list of ingredients that this one is as close to her delicious steak. ** With Mashed Potatoes or Egg Noodles it will be amazing. ** Thanks for sharing this perfect recipe. **
YAY! I’m so glad you liked it.
I love this recipe – so quick and easy! I like to use cube steak because it’s got a texture that allows more absorption of the flavors in the sauce. Quick and easy for busy days.
Yes I think that would work great.
Could I substitute tomato sauce for the tomatoes? Tomato haters in the house.
Thank you for commenting. I’m so glad you like the recipe.
This was an excellent recipe. I did change up a few things to make it more flavorful. After browning the steaks, I poured the broth in the same pan to deglaze along with the peppers garlic, Worcestershire and onions. Let them cook for about 5 minutes then transferred it all, along with the diced tomatoes in the crockpot.served it over mashed potatoes! No leftovers! Thanks for a Stella recipe. This is definitely a keeper.
In the crockpot now, house smells wonderful. Will let y’all know it is. Thanks
That is ok, I would just an extra hour to your cooking time.
What if my meat is not completely defrosted ?????
It was pretty good! I usually make mine in the instapot but this was a really good alternative! I would show you a picture but it won’t let me.
This is now my “go to” Swiss steak recipe. Me H?E?B has a frozen fajita mix with bell peppers and onions and I use that to save on prep time. Used to cook on stove top and had to watch it for hours for the meat to be tender.
I found the print button.
I wanted to look at your recipe to double check on the cooking time and saw that my recipe is so similar to yours! For your readers I would like to say this is the best swiss steak recipe you can ever use!! It seems to take me a little longer for the prep time but I do it the same way you do. I’m not a fast cook but I think I’m a good one. You just can’t go wrong with this recipe!
I am 89yrs. Old and my wife is very I’ll. I have to take over the cooking and I need help. I am trying the swiss steak this week. It sounds very good.
This is my husband’s favorite recipe. He would me make this every two weeks, but I make it once a month. He even eats leftover for 2 or 3 days and he is a person who doesn’t like leftover
Made this tonight. It was delicious! Steak so tender and flavorful. Served over mashed potatoes. Thanks for sharing. We will definitely make this over and over again.
Reminded me of a restaurant that I used to work at and we served it on a buffet bar every Sunday this recipe was so nice and tender and full of flavor
This is my husband’s favorite recipe. He would have me make it twice a month, but I won’t. The few times I did make it, he ate it for 3 days in a row, it he usually doesn’t like leftover.
Thank you Gwen – I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
This recipe is awesome! I used both beef steak and pork steak. We had NO leftovers and I was asked to make it again! I used two 10 ounce cans of Rotel and one 10 ounce can of petite diced tomatoes. (I’m from Louisiana). It was magnifico! ?
It’s a recipe my family wished I had doubled!
Can I use garlic powder instead of minced garlic?
