This Root Beer Pulled Pork Recipe is perfect for a weeknight dinner or a game day gathering. You only need 4 ingredients and the results are a delicious shredded pork that is perfect on a hoagie or served over rice.

Ingredients

Ingredients needed - hamburger buns, pork shoulder, root beer, BBQ Sauce
  • Boneless Pork Shoulder – Use a cut of pork that you prefer.
  • Root Beer – We love using Root Beer in this recipe but you can easily use any dark soda instead of Root Beer if you prefer.  
  • Barbecue Sauce – Feel free to use any type of BBQ Sauce that you prefer. We have even used Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ Sauce for a delicious addition.

Variation Ideas

  • Change Soda – Feel free to use Dr Pepper, Coca Cola or Pepsi, Ginger Ale or Hard Cider or Beer instead of Root Beer.
  • Buns – You can serve this pulled pork with any type of buns or slider buns. We have even made Homemade Kings Hawaiian Rolls recipe to serve the pulled pork on.
  • Pork Variation – For this slow cooker pork recipe, we recommend using a pork shoulder. It may also be called pork butt. Other pork options are a pork tenderloin, pork loin roast or pork roast.
  • Seasoning – We love how simple the ingredients are for this recipe. But feel free to add in additional spices for a variation. Add ½ teaspoon of garlic powder, fresh garlic, onion powder, kosher salt, black pepper or paprika. For a hint of sweetness you can add in a tablespoon of brown sugar.

How to Make Root Beer Pulled Pork in Crock Pot

  • Step 1 – Add in ingredients – Add the pork, pour Root Beer and barbecue sauce to a crock pot.  
  • Step 2 – Slow Cook – Cover and cook on low for 10 hours or on high heat for 5 hours with the crockpot lid.

  • Step 3 – Shred Pork – Remove the pork, shred it.  Remove any excess fat and put the remaining shredded pork to the crockpot.  Stir the shredded pork into the sauce in the crock pot. 
  • Step 4 – Serve and enjoy – Serve the pork on the hamburger buns with slice red onions and enjoy. Feel free to season with salt and pepper.

How to Shred the Pork Easily

Cooking the pork in the slow cooker makes it so tender. You can easily shred the pork with forks on a cutting board, but we prefer to shred with a hand mixer or a stand up mixer.

Simply remove the cooked pork from the slow cooker and place in a bowl, then shred. Place the shredded pork back in the slow cooker to mix with the cooking liquid and root beer.

Storage and Freezer Tips

  • Storing – Refrigerate the leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days. We recommend placing in individual container for an easy lunch the next day.
  • Freezer – We love to freeze the leftover shredded slow cooker root beer pulled pork sandwiches. It makes for an easy dinner for another time. Place the room temperature pork in a freezer safe container or freeze zip lock bag. Make sure to remove any and place in the freezer. If stored properly the shredded pork will last about 3 to 6 months.
  • Reheat – When you are ready to serve again and your shredded root beer BBQ pork is frozen, place in the refrigerator overnight to thaw. You can reheat in the slow cooker or sauce pan for our recommended way to reheat. The shredded pork can also be reheated in the microwave in 30 second interval until reheated.
