What is Italian Wedding Soup?
Italian Wedding Soup is not a soup that is served at weddings. The original name of the soup is minestra maritata, which why it is called Italian Wedding Soup.
It is a heavy broth soup that usually contains green vegetables, meatballs and orzo pasta. We love making it in the slow cooker but it can also be made on the stove top.
Ingredients:
- Frozen Chicken Meatballs
- Onion
- Carrots
- Celery
- Minced Garlic
- Dried Thyme
- Chicken Broth
- Orzo Pasta
- Spinach
- Parmesan Cheese

Variations Ideas:
- Meatballs – We used chicken meatballs but feel free to use ground beef meatballs, turkey meatballs, or ground pork. You can even make Homemade Mini Meatballs to use in this recipe.
- Vegetables – Feel free to use different types of veggies. Instead of spinach you can use kale or add in chopped broccoli.
- Seasoning – The seasoning can be changed or added for delicious flavor. Add in fresh herbs, dried oregano, garlic powders, kosher salt, and black pepper. We have even added in red-pepper flakes for a kick of spice.
- Small Pasta – Feel free to use different types of pasta to make this Italian Weddings soup. You can use Ditalini or Acini de Pepe Pasta.
Step by Step Instructions:
Step 1 – Just put all of the ingredients except for the orzo and the spinach in the crock pot.
Step 2 – Cover and cook on low for 6 hours
Step 3 – About 15 minutes before serving, add the pasta and the chopped spinach.
Step 4 – Cover and cook until the pasta is soft. You can top with fresh Parmesan cheese if you would like to. Serve and Enjoy!
Recipe Tips:
- Pasta – After stirring in the Orzo make sure it is cooked to al dente and soft before serving. Cooking time will vary.
- Cooking – Cook the soup on low until all the ingredients are combined.
- Dutch Oven – We love making this recipe in the slow cooker, but it also is great cooked on the stovetop.
Serving Suggestions:
This soup is delicious served in bowls with a side of Homemade Garlic Bread. We have even made dinner rolls with a side of roasted vegetables for a complete meal idea.

Store the leftover married soup in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.
If you plan on freezing this soup, we recommend keeping the pasta separately. Pasta does not freeze well when it is ready to be thawed. Place the soup in a freezer safe container and it will stay good for up to 3 months.
Depending on how much you have left, reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave.

Crock Pot Italian Wedding Soup
Ingredients
- 1 pkg frozen chicken meatballs 24 oz
- 1/4 onion chopped
- 3 large carrots chopped
- 2 stalks celery diced
- 3 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 8 cups chicken broth
- 1 1/2 cup orzo pasta
- 4 cups spinach chopped
- 1/2 cup parmesan cheese optional to top
Instructions
- Place everything but the orzo and the spinach in the crock pot.
- Cover and cook on low for 6 hours.
- 15-20 minutes before you are ready to at stir in the orzo and the chopped spinach.
- Cook until the pasta is soft.
- Serve immediately with fresh parmesan cheese.
