Being a seasoned mom of 8 kids, casseroles are an easy way to get done when we have busy weeknights. But I have to make casseroles that I know my kids will eat. This casserole recipe is one my of kids favorites and they request it for dinner on a weekly basis.

Ingredients: 

Ingredients needed for Chicken Tater Tot Casserole - Cooked chicken, cream of chicken soup, cream of mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, cheese, tater tots
  • Cooked Shredded Chicken 
  • Cream of Chicken Soup (10.5 ounces) 
  • Cream of Mushroom Soup (10.5 ounces) 
  • Milk 
  • Garlic Powder 
  • Onion Powder 
  • Salt 
  • Black Pepper 
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese 
  • Frozen Tater Tots

Substitutions and Variations:

  • Chicken – This cheesy chicken tater tot casserole recipe is perfect to use leftover chicken. We have even shredded rotisserie chicken and it tasted amazing. Check out this Slow Cooker Chicken Breast Recipe for a delicious way to cook chicken.
  • Vegetables – Add in veggies to the creamy sauce mixture. This is a great way to sneak in chopped Brussel sprouts, green beans or asparagus. We have even mixed in frozen corn and pea for a delicious addition.
  • Ground Beef – If you prefer you can also make this recipe with ground beef or ground turkey for a delicious variations.
  • Cream Soup – We used canned cream soup but you can make your own Cream of Chicken Soup or Cream of Mushroom Soup. You can also substitute with cream of celery.
  • Ranch Seasoning – If you love the flavor of ranch seasoning, mix in a packet or make homemade.
  • Shredded Cheese – You can easily add whatever cheese that you prefer. We like cheddar cheese because of the mild taste, but you can add in Pepper Jack Cheese for an extra kick in the taste.

Step by Step Instructions:

Step 1 – Preheat oven to 375 degrees and prepare baking dish. Then in a large bowl, whisk together the cream of chicken soup, cream of mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper.

Step 2 – Stir in the shredded chicken into the cream of soup mixture.

Step 3 – Spread the chicken mixture into the prepared baking dish.

Step 4 – Sprinkle one cup of cheddar cheese over the top.  Then top with tater tots in a single layer on the cheese. Bake 30-40 minutes until the tator tots are browned.  Then add more cheese and continue baking.

Recipe Tips:

  • Prepare Baking Dish – Before layering the ingredients in the casserole dish, make sure to spray with nonstick cooking spray. This helps with cleanup and serving the casserole.
  • Shredding Chicken – If you need a quick way to shred your cook chicken, learn how to shred with a mixer.
  • Rest Casserole – Remove the casserole from the oven. Then let rest for 5-10 minutes. Then the casserole is ready to serve and enjoy.
  • Baking Casserole – If the tater tots on top start to brown to fast, you can cover with aluminum to continue baking. This will allow the center to finishing heating up without burning the tater tots.

Serving Suggestions:

This casserole is rich and hearty which makes it perfect to serve with a light side dish. We usually serve with a caesar salad or a garden salad. But you can also serve with some broccoli.

We like to top with diced green onions and a dollop of sour cream.

How to Store Leftovers:

Refrigerate the leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days. 

Can you Freeze?

Yes, this casserole is great for freezing. We have even doubled the recipes and prepared the second casserole in a disposable pan. Make sure to cover completely and it will last about 3 months in the freezer.

How to Reheat Leftovers:

Reheating leftovers is easy by placing in a casserole dish. Then reheat in the oven at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes. If you have a smaller portion, just reheat in the microwave in 1 minute intervals.

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and spray a 9X13 baking dish with a non-stick cooking spray.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cream of chicken soup, cream of mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper.
  • Stir in the shredded chicken. Spread this mixture into the bottom of the baking dish.
  • Sprinkle one cup of cheddar cheese over the top.  Then arrange the tater tots in a single layer on top.
  • Bake 30-40 minutes until the tator tots are browned.
  • Top with the remaining cheddar cheese.  Bake for 5 more minutes to melt.
  • Remove and let rest for 5-10 minutes and then the casserole is ready to serve and enjoy!
