This banana bread brownies recipe is one of my favorite ways to use up ripe bananas. The ingredients are simple and makes these brownies so moist and delicious.
The brown sugar glaze that is served on top makes it extra sweet. This cake like banana bread is always a crowd favorite and the perfect dessert to bring to any occasion.
These banana bread brownies can easily be customized to what you prefer. You can serve with vanilla ice cream or enjoy with your morning coffee.

What are Banana Bread Brownies?
Banana Bread brownies are prepared in a 9×13 baking pan instead of a loaf pan. The brown butter frosting makes these brownies so delicious. There is no cocoa powder in this recipe, but simple banana bread ingredients.

Ingredients:

For the Brownies:
- Granulated Sugar
- Sour Cream
- Butter (softened)
- Large Eggs
- Ripe Bananas (mashed)
- Vanilla Extract
- All Purpose Flour
- Baking Soda
- Salt
Make the Frosting:
- Butter
- Light Brown Sugar
- Powdered Sugar
- Vanilla Extract
- Milk
How to Make Banana Bread Brownies:
For the Brownies:
- Step 1 – Heat Oven – Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Then spray a 9X13 baking pan with a non-stick cooking spray.
- Step 2 – Cream Butter & Sugar – In a large bowl, bowl beat together sugar and butter. Mix with a hand held mixer or stand up mixer until combined.
- Step 3 – Add in Bananas – Add in the sour cream, eggs, mashed bananas and vanilla extract. Mix until combined.
- Step 4 – Mix in Dry Ingredients – Then stir in the flour, baking soda, salt and mix until just combined. Be careful not to over mix. You can also use baking powder.
- Step 5 – Pour into Baking Dish – Pour the batter evenly into a baking pan.
- Step 6 – Bake Brownies – Then bake for 25 minutes to 30 minutes. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
How to Make Frosting:
- Step 1 – Heat Butter – Heat the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the brown sugar.
- Step 2 – Bring to a Low Boil – Bring the mixture to a low boil. Then cook until the sugar dissolves and the butter starts to brown.
- Step 3 – Remove – Remove from heat.
- Step 4 – Mix Ingredients – Whisk in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Then gradually add in the milk until the frosting is a good consistency.
- Step 5 – Pour Glaze – Pour the glaze over the warm, golden brown banana brownies. Spread the glaze with a butter knife or a spatula.
- Step 6 – Cool Brownies – Let the brownies set until the glaze has cooled.
- Step 7 – Serve and Enjoy – Then they are ready to cut, serve and enjoy.
Variations Ideas:
- Chopped Nuts – If you love nuts in your brownies, add them in the banana bread batter. Chopped pecans or chopped walnuts are always a great addition to this sweet treat.
- Chocolate Chips – Chocolate and banana bread is a great combination and delicious added to these brownies. You can add in mini or regular chocolate chips. Peanut butter chocolate chips would also be a delicious combination.
- Frosting – The brown sugar frosting is my favorite. But feel free to change the frosting to a cream cheese frosting. You can also use a store bought frosting if you prefer.
- Greek Yogurt – Substitute the sour cream with a plain Greek yogurt. This will make these brownies a lighter and a healthier version.
Recipe Tips:
- Bananas – The best time to make this recipe is when your bananas are really ripe. The riper the bananas the better these brownie tastes.
- Prepare Baking Dish – Make sure to prepare the baking dish by spraying with cooking spray. This helps for cleanup and serving the brownies.
- Combining Ingredients – When combining the ingredients for the banana bread brownies, make sure to not over mix. In large bowl beat until everything is combined.
- Frosting – For the best texture, we recommend pouring the glaze over the brownies that are warm. I love to serve these brownies when they are slightly warm. There is no need to cool completely before adding the frosting.
- Baking Brownies – While baking the brownies watch carefully. You want to bake the brownies until they are golden brown. Use a toothpick to check the center of the cake. If comes out clean, then brownies are done.
How to Serve Banana Bread Brownies:
These brownies bake perfectly in a 9×13 baking dish. We like to cut in smaller pieces to serve at your holiday parties.
Banana Bread Brownies are delicious served by itself. But you can also add a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
We even enjoy with our morning coffee or as a holiday dessert.
Can I Freeze Banana Bread Brownies?
Yes, these brownies can easily be frozen frosted or unfrosted. Make sure before placing in the freezer that it is covered with plastic wrap and aluminum foil.
If stored properly these banana bread brownies will last about 3 months in the freezer.
How to Store Leftovers:
Refrigerate the leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4-5 days. You can even make the brownies ahead of time and store in the fridge. We recommend making about 2 days ahead of time and then frost when ready to serve.
