What is a hot dog wrapped in bacon called?

This type of hot dog is called a Danger Dog. Hot dogs wrapped in bacon originated in Mexico and was sold by street vendors.

How to Make Bacon wrapped Hot Dogs

Step 1 – Wrap bacon around each hot dog.  Making sure not to overlap the piece of bacon so that it cooks evenly.  Secure both ends of the bacon to the hot dog with toothpicks.

Step 2 – Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.  Place the hot dogs on a baking sheet lined with foil or with parchment paper.

Step 3 – Cook the hot dogs. Bake the hot dogs for 13-16 minutes (flipping them halfway through the cook time) until the bacon is crisp and cooked through.

Step 4 – Allow the hot dogs to sit for 5 minutes.  Remove the toothpicks. Then serve on the hot dog buns and enjoy!

How to Grill

  • Step 1 – Preheat the grill over high heat (approximately 400 degrees F).  Rub the grill grates with olive oil or spray with a non-stick cooking spray so that the hot dogs do not stick to the grill.  
  • Step 2 – Put the hot dogs on the grill. Place the hot dogs with bacon on the grill. Cook with the grill lid closed for 8-12 minutes (turning them every 2-3 minutes) until the bacon is browned and crispy. 
  • Step 3 – Remove the hot dogs from the grill.  Allow them to sit for 5 minutes.  Remove the toothpicks. Then serve on the hot dog buns and enjoy! 

How to Cook Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs in Air Fryer

  • Step 1 – Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F.  If your air fryer does not have a preheat option, then run the air fryer at 400 degrees F for 5 minutes to warm it up to medium heat.
  • Step 2 – Coat the basket in oil. Rub the air fryer basket with oil so that the hot dogs do not stick to the basket.  Place the hot dogs in the air fryer basket. Cook at 400 degrees F for 8 minutes.
  • Step 3 – Flip the hot dogs. Air-Fry for 5-6 more minutes at 400 degrees F until the bacon is cooked through and crispy.  
  • Step 4 – Remove the hot dogs from the air fryer.  Allow them to sit for 5 minutes.  Remove the toothpicks. Then serve on the hot dog buns and enjoy! 

Tips and Tricks

  • Hot Dogs. Use your favorite brand of hot dogs in this recipe. It really comes down to preference. You can also try using Polish Sausages for something different.
  • Allow to cool. Let the hot dogs cool a few minutes once removing from the oven.
  • Toothpicks. Don’t forget to remove the toothpicks from the hot dog before serving.

Thin slices of bacon work best in this recipe. We do not recommend using thick cut bacon because it will take longer to cool and become crispy.
