Texas Roadhouse Country Fried Steak is one of our favorite menu items at Texas Roadhouse. When my family loves a menu item at their favorite restaurant, we try and recreate it at home.
The chicken fried steak is dipped into a egg and flour mixture and then fried to perfection. We also love to make the creamy gravy to top the fried steak. These two combine make the perfect meal.

Why is it Called Chicken Fried Steak?
Chicken Fried Steak originates because of the style of cooking. A chicken fried steak is prepared similar to fried chicken. The steak is seasoned with flour, and then dipped in egg and milk.
This gives the steak a coating so when you deep fry in oil, it has a crispy texture. Which is similar to Fried Chicken.
Ingredients
- Boneless Sirloin Steak – Pounded to ¼ inch thick with a meat mallet

- Cayenne Pepper – Delicious spicy flavor but if you are out check out the Best Cayenne Pepper Substitute
- Buttermilk – Gives the steaks the best crispy texture.
- Butter – We used salted butter

How to Make Texas Roadhouse Chicken Fried Steak
- Step 1 – Prepare Steaks – Pound out the steaks until they are approximately 1/4” thick and there should be 4 pieces.
- Step 2 – Mix dry ingredients – In a shallow bowl, mix together the ¾ cup of flour, garlic powder, salt, pepper and cayenne pepper.
- Step 3 – Mix milk and eggs – Then in a separate shallow bowl whisk together the eggs and buttermilk.
Step 4 – Dip steak in dry and wet mixtures – Then dip and coat the steaks in the flour mixture. Then dip the steak in the egg mixture and then back into the flour again.
Step 5 – Cook Steaks – Gently place each coated steak into the oil and cook for 2-3 minutes per side until the steak is lightly golden brown.
- Step 6 – Place on paper towel and drain – Drain the steak on a plate lined with a paper towel or wire rack.
- Step 7 – Place in oven – Then place the chicken fried steak on a sheet pan in the oven while you fry the remaining steaks.
- Step 8 – Melt butter and flour for gravy – Combine the butter and flour in a medium saucepan.
- Step 9 – Add Milk to melted butter mixture – Heat over medium high heat until the butter is melted and the flour is cooked. Then pour in the 2 cups of milk and whisk it in to make sure there are no lumps.
- Step 10 – Simmer Gravy – Allow the gravy to simmer for 3-5 minute until it thickens. If the gravy is too thick, add more milk and if the gravy is too thin, allow it to continue to simmer until it has thickened.
- Step 11 – Serve Warm and Enjoy – Then serve the chicken fried steak with the gravy poured top and enjoy!
Recipe Tips
- Steaks – Make sure to pound the steaks to about the same size. This helps to cook the steaks evenly.
- Dipping Steaks – Make sure to pack the flour onto the steaks so that it’s completely coated and covered with egg mixture. This creates the best breading on the steaks.
- Cooking Steaks – You can cook the steaks in any skillet but we recommend cooking in a cast iron skillet.
What Cut of Meat is Best for Chicken Fried Steak?
We used a sirloin steak but you can also use a cube steak, a tenderized steak or a round steak. This recipe was created to make a cheap cut of steak to taste better.
We recommend to pound steak into about ¼ inch thick to make a thin slice.
How to Make Gravy for Chicken Fried Steak?
Making white gravy is an easy process with simple ingredients. It is worth it for this recipe to make Homemade White Gravy. Simply melt the better and flour in a skillet then add in the milk. Whisk the ingredients together until there are no lumps.
Continue stirring until gravy forms. If it is to thick, you can always add in more milk.

Frequently Asked Questions
This chicken fried steak is best served fresh as it’s crispy and delicious but you can store the leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
Once your steak has cooled to room temperature, wrap each leftover steak in plastic wrap. Then wrap in foil and place in an air tight container or freezer bag. If properly store, the steak will stay fresh for about 3 months.
We recommend reheat your chicken fried steak in the oven. Simply remove the steak from the refrigerator while you oven is preheating to 400 degrees. Then place steak on a baking sheet and reheat until warm. This will take about 10 to 15 minutes.

Texas Roadhouse Chicken Fried Steak
Ingredients
For the Steak:
- 1 1/2 pound Boneless Sirloin Steak pounded to ¼ inch thick
- 1 1/2 cups Flour
- 1 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Pepper
- 1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper
- 1 Cup Buttermilk
- 2 Large Eggs
- Vegetable Oil for Frying
Instructions
- Pound out the steaks until they are approximately 1/4” thick and there should be 4 pieces.
- In a shallow bowl, mix together the flour, garlic powder, salt, pepper and cayenne pepper. Then in a separate shallow bowl whisk together the eggs and buttermilk.
- Then dip and coat the steaks in the flour mixture. Then dip the steak in the buttermilk mixture and then back into the flour again and pack the flour onto the steaks so that it’s completely coated. Place the coated steaks on a plate. Continue this process until all the steaks are coated.
- Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F. Then heat approximately 1 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until the oil is approximately 350 degrees F.
- You will have to work in batches for the next step. Gently place each coated steak into the oil and cook for 2-3 minutes per side until the steak is lightly golden brown. Drain the steak on a plate lined with a paper towel and then place the chicken fried steak on a sheet pan in the oven while you fry the remaining steaks.
- Then it’s time to make the gravy. Combine the butter and flour in a medium saucepan.
- Heat over medium high heat until the butter is melted and the flour is cooked. Then pour in the milk and whisk it in to make sure there are no lumps.
- Allow the gravy to simmer for 3-5 minute until it thickens.
- If the gravy is too thick, add more milk and if the gravy is too thin, allow it to continue to simmer until it has thickened.
- Then serve the chicken fried steak with the gravy poured top and enjoy!
