We made homemade graham crackers and the kids just loved this easy snack recipe. They are delicious and very easy to make and they are a perfect addition to our frugal after school snacks series.

Skip the store-bought graham cracker and make homemade. You will love the sweet taste and the many ways to serve them.

How do you Make Graham Crackers from Scratch?

I always get some of the craziest looks when I mention that I make homemade graham crackers. Honestly, when I first heard about them I just knew they had to be complicated and not worth the effort. Boy was I wrong!

Making homemade graham crackers is so much easier than it sounds. If you can mix up a basic dough (there isn’t even any yeast!) and roll it out, you can make your own graham crackers! Promise. This really is a great recipe for anyone to try.

You might be wondering where in the world you get Graham flour from. The good news is that you don’t have to! Graham flour is basically a coarse whole wheat flour. When I make graham crackers I prefer to use King Arthur stone -milled whole wheat flour. Its texture is perfect.

Variations Ideas

You can also make cinnamon graham crackers. I would follow the recipe as stated, but right before you put them in the oven, sprinkle them with this cinnamon sugar mixture.

Bake as normal. You will have just made cinnamon graham crackers which are one of my kids favorites!

How to Make Graham Crackers

Combine butter, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon and honey in a bowl

Step 1 – In a large bowl, combine butter, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon and honey until light and fluffy.

Combine dry ingredients in a bowl

Step 2 – In a separate medium bowl, mix the regular flour with the baking soda and salt.

Rolling dough in a ball

Step 3 – Gradually add in flour mixture and wheat flour alternating between them until incorporated. Combine with a electric mixer or a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment.

Rolling the dough out with a rolling pin inbetween parchment paper.

Step 4 – Roll out the dough between sheets of wax or sheets of parchment paper to about 1/8” thickness.

Cutting dough into rectangle shape with a pizza cutter

Step 5 – Cut or score the sheets of dough into individual rectangles cracker sizes. A pizza cutter works perfectly to cut the dough or a knife!

Poking holes in the dough

Step 6 – Use a fork, skewer or toothpick to make holes in the crackers. If you want cinnamon sugar graham crackers, top the dough with a cinnamon-sugar mixture before cutting.

  • Step 7 – Place in the freezer for 20 minutes to harden and chill.
  • Step 8 – Line a baking sheet with silicone or piece of parchment paper. I love using my silicone baking mat. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Step 9 – Separate cookies and place on your prepared baking sheet.
  • Step 10 – Bake until the crackers begin to brown, about 10 minutes.

What Goes Good on Graham Crackers?

Graham crackers are so versatile and can be used for so much more than s’mores! Personally I love this homemade version better than store bought graham crackers because they hold up when you are smashing the s’mores.

We love using them as a dipper in some of our favorite dessert dips like this easy cookie dough dip recipe or in this easy cake batter dip.  These dips are so delicious and perfect for kids and adults too! They would make the prettiest dessert trays.

Homemade graham crackers are also delicious dunked into chocolate pudding or yogurt! And if we’re being honest here, homemade graham crackers make the best ice cream sandwiches! Especially if you’re also using homemade ice cream!

Frequently Asked Questions

How To Store Leftovers

Once you’ve baked your graham crackers to perfection you will need to allow them to cool completely before storing them. Once they’re room temperature, wrap in plastic and place them in an airtight container.
They can be stored in an airtight container for up to 5 days. If they begin to get stale, crush them and use them as a graham cracker crust.

Can I Freeze the Dough?

Yes, you can mix up the dough beforehand and freeze it to bake at a later date. All you need to do is thaw it, and let it come back to room temperature before rolling it out and baking them.

  1. Renee Denomme says:

I made these graham crackers today and they are easy to make and roll. They are delicious! Iโ€™ve been looking for healthy snack recipes to replace all the snacks containing GMO, so I made these with all NON-GMO products. I will make them regularly. Thank you for a great recipe!

  2. Carrie Barnard says:

Thank you for letting us know.

  3. Karen says:

I found these to be too soft. They were more like a cookie. The first batch I cooked for 15 minutes. The second batch I increased the time to 25 minutes. Much better.

  4. Carrie says:

Dawn – I’m so glad you enjoyed them. To make them harden, I would extend the cooking time by 4-5 minutes.

  5. Dawn Raymond says:

These taste wonderful! However mine did not get hard, they are nice and soft. Any suggesting on how to achieve a harder cracker?

  6. Carrie says:

Wanda – I would substitute with either almond or coconut flour. Thank you!

Hi Carrie.! My daughter & I both have to eat gluten free like you have to now. We can’t eat wheat flour obviously so do you have any ideas on what to use as an alternative? BTW I love your videos! ???

  8. Carrie says:

Jessica – I have updated the recipe. Yes, the baking soda is mixed with the regular flour before it’s blended in with the other ingredients. Thank you for letting me know!

  9. Jessica says:

When do you add the baking soda? Should it be combined with the flour?

  10. Carrie says:

Rina – I corrected the post, there was 1 step missing in the step by step instructions. Thanks for letting me know.
Here is the step that was missing originally between 2 and 3.
“Roll out dough between sheets of wax or parchment paper to about 1/8โ€ thickness.”

  11. Rina says:

How did you get from step 2 to step 3?

  12. Carrie says:

    All purpose

  13. Denise says:

The flour is it self rising or all purpose?
