Variation Ideas

  • Chocolate Chips – Substitute white chocolate chips instead of milk chocolate. Dark chocolate chips make another good substitution.
  • Peanut Butter – Peanut Butter Chips taste great combined with the chocolate. Try doing a ¼ cup of each for amazing flavors.
  • Change flavor of Cake Mix – Try other types of box of cake mix instead of yellow cake mix. White Cake Mix, red velvet cake mix, chocolate, strawberry, devil’s food, lemon, vanilla cake mix and more.
  • Sprinkles – For a fun twist, add in about ¼ cup of sprinkles for a festive cookie. We have even added in M&M.

Step by Step Instructions

Combining the ingredients in a bowl

Step 1 – First, preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Second, combine all of the wet ingredients and dry ingredients in a mixing bowl except the chocolate chips. Now, the batter will be thick but that is normal.

Mixing in the chocolate chips into the cookie dough

Step 2 – Next, add the chocolate chips and gently fold them into yellow cake mix, any brand mixture.

Placing the cookie dough on the baking sheet

Step 3 – Finally, spoon the cookie dough on baking sheets and leave about 2 inches between each cookie. You can even added chocolate chips on top of the dough.

Step 4 – Bake until the edges start to brown. This normally takes 8-10 minutes. The cookies don’t take long!

Recipe Tips

  • Homemade Taste – Now most cake mix cookies recipes turn out “crumbly” which are great but since I wanted this recipe to taste more like “homemade” chocolate chip cookies I added more oil. It was perfect and they turn out delicious every time.
  • Cookie Scoop – We save time by using stainless steel scoops. This is much easier than using two spoons and faster too. Plus, I like how each cookie is uniform. You can also try using an ice cream scoop but they are often too big.
  • Wire Rack – Let the cookies cool slightly before removing from the cookie sheet. If you remove too soon, they can crumble. After a few minutes, transfer the cookies to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  • Prepare Baking Sheet – I like to line the baking sheet with parchment paper to easily remove the cookies and for easy cleanup.

I love how easy and quick this is! The only thing I found wrong was the serving size. I used a small cookie scoop but only got half the amount I should have. Not a huge problem, I’ll keep on making these!
