Variations Ideas

  • Rice – We made this dish with long-grain white rice but feel free to use jasmine rice or basmati rice.
  • Broth – Feel free to substitute the water with broth. You can easily use 1 cup of beef broth or beef stock and 1 cup of water. Chicken broth also a delicious variations.
  • Seasoning – We like using the Homemade Onion Soup Mix but you can also use the packet. For added flavor, mix in condensed French Onions Soup or cream of mushroom soup.

How to Make Stick of Butter Rice

  • Step 1 – In a medium saucepan, combine the rice and water. Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat.

  • Step 2 – Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid. Simmer the rice for 18-20 minutes, or until the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.
  • Step 3 – Remove the saucepan from the heat and let it stand, covered, for an additional 5 minutes to allow the rice to steam and fluff up.
  • Step 4 – While the rice is cooking, cut the stick of butter into small cubes.
  • Step 5 – After the rice has finished steaming, uncover the saucepan and add the cubed butter and onion soup mix to the hot rice.

  • Step 6 – Using a fork, gently stir and fluff the rice, allowing the butter to melt and the onion soup mix to distribute evenly throughout the rice.
  • Step 7 – Once the butter is fully melted and the rice is well mixed, taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.

Expert Tips

  • Rice – I recommend using long grain rice for its fluffiness and non-stickiness. It will absorb the flavors better.
  • Whole Stick of Butter – Before placing the butter into the pan with the rice, slice pats of butter to easily melt it.
  • Cooking Rice Dish – Cooking the rice on the stovetop will vary. Before mixing in the butter and seasoning, I like to test the rice to make sure it is soft.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Bake this Rice Dish?

Yes, you can bake the rice without first boiling it in the water. Place the uncooked rice in a baking dish, top with seasoning and butter. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for about 25 minutes. Then uncover dish and continue baking for another 25 minutes. Once finish baking then fluff baked rice casserole and serve.

Do I Need to Rinse Rice before Cooking?

In this recipe, there is no need to rinse the rice. If you always rinse your rice before cooking, then you can. It does not change the recipe.

Can I Use Brown Rice?

I have not tried this recipe with brown rice, but I am sure it will work. You may just need to cook the rice in more water. Follow the directions on the brown rice package.

How to Store Leftover Butter Rice

Store the leftover butter rice in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will stay fresh for up to 3-4 days.

How to Reheat Butter Rice

Reheat the leftovers in the microwave for about 30 seconds until heated.
