Chicken Green Bean Casserole Recipe:

This chicken green bean casserole recipe is a twist to your traditional casserole recipe. It is loaded with shredded cooked chicken plus all the traditional ingredients even the French fried onions.

This casserole is a family favorite. It is a holiday staple but we have even made it for an easy weeknight meal. You will love that it is low carb, but your family will still love the delicious flavor.

If you have leftover chicken, mix it in your classic green bean casserole. Serve it with your favorite side dishes for a complete meal idea.

Ingredients needed for chicken green bean casserole

Ingredients: 

Serves: 6 

  • Frozen Green Beans 
  • Butter 
  • Sliced Mushrooms 
  • Onion (finely diced) 
  • Milk 
  • Cream of Mushroom Soup (10 ounces each)
  • Cooked Chicken (shredded) 
  • Salt 
  • Black Pepper 
  • Onion Powder 
  • Garlic Powder 
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese 
  • French Fried Onions (divided) 

How to Make Chicken Green Bean Casserole: 

  • Step 1 – Heat Oven – Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.  
  • Step 2 – Cook Green Beans – Cook the frozen green beans based on the package instructions.  Drain off the excess water and set aside. 
  • Step 3 – Melt Butter – Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium high heat.  Add in the onions and sliced mushrooms.  Sautรฉ for a few minutes until the onions and mushrooms are soft. 
  • Step 4 – Combine Ingredients – In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soups. Add in milk and seasonings until well combined.  Then stir in the chicken, mushroom and onion mixture. Add green beans, 1 cup of the cheese and 1 cup of the French fried onions.  
  • Step 5 – Spread in baking dish – Spread this mixture into a 9X13 baking pan.  Bake for 15-18 minutes or until heated through and the casserole is bubbling in the middle. Bake in oven at 350 degrees.
  • Step 6 – Top with Cheese and Fried Onions – Top with the remaining French fried onions and cheddar cheese.  Place back in the middle and cook for 5 more minutes until the cheese is melted. 
  • Step 7 – Serve and Enjoy – Remove from the oven.  Let the casserole sit for 5 minutes and then itโ€™s ready to serve and enjoy.

How Long Do I Bake Casserole:

Cooking time will vary based on your oven, but we recommend starting with 15 minutes. You will know that your casserole is done when it starts to bubble. It may take up to 30 minutes.

Then top the casserole with the French Fried Onions and Cheese bake for about 5 more minutes.

Green Bean Chicken Casserole Recipe Tips:

  • Prepare Ingredients – We used frozen green beans in this recipe. Make sure to drain any excess water. We also like to have the chicken shredded beforehand. This saves me time when combining everything.
  • No Need To Cover – We like to get the top crispy when making this recipe. There is no need to cover with aluminum foil while baking.
  • Prepare Ahead Of Time – This is the perfect casserole to prepare ahead of time. You can prepare and then place in the fridge. Make sure to cover with a plastic wrap. Then bake casserole when you are ready to serve.
  • Combine Ingredients – In a large bowl mix the ingredients until everything is combined and covered.

  • Cream Soup – Feel free to change the cream soup to cream of chicken soup or cream of celery. You can even make your own homemade version here.
  • Green Beans – We used frozen green beans in this recipe. But you can use fresh green beans or french-style green beans.
  • Casserole Dish – You can bake this chicken in a 9×13 baking dish or casserole dish.
  • Chicken – We usually make this recipe with leftover chicken, but you can also use rotisserie chicken.

How do you Freeze Green Bean Casserole:

Freezing this casserole with these easy steps.

  • Once it has cooled to room temperature, place in a freeze safe container.
  • Wrap the casserole in a plastic wrap and then with foil.
  • Place in the freezer and if stored properly, it will last up to 6 months.

When you are ready to serve, let the green bean casserole thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Then place in a baking dish and reheat in a preheated oven at 350 degrees.

You can also place small portions in the microwave if you prefer.
