Ingredients 

Ingredients needed to make the sloppy joe mixture - ground beef, yellow onion, ketchup, brown sugar, garlic powder, salt and pepper, mustard, Worcestershire Sauce, water, Hawaiian Rolls, Cheese, butter, garlic salt, sesame seeds
  • Ground Beef
  • Small Yellow Onion (diced) 
  • Ketchup 
  • Brown Sugar 
  • Garlic Powder
  • Salt and black pepper
  • Yellow Mustard 
  • Worcestershire Sauce 
  • Water 
  • Hawaiian Rolls or Slider Rolls
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese
  • Butter melted
  • Garlic Salt

Variation Ideas

  • Rolls – We love the flavor of Hawaiian Rolls but you can easily use any type of dinner rolls.
  • Sloppy Joe Sauce – We love making homemade sloppy joes, but you can use canned sloppy joe mix if you prefer.
  • Mustard – We used yellow mustard but you can use Dijon mustard instead.
  • Change Meat – Feel free to change the meat to ground turkey or ground chicken for a delicious variation.
  • Seasoning – For a kick of flavor, add in a ¼ teaspoon of red pepper flakes.

How to Make Sloppy Joe Sliders

Step 1 – Cook the Ground Beef – Add the ground beef and diced onions to a large skillet. Heat over medium high heat. Brown the beef and onions, breaking up the meat into small pieces. Cook until the onions are translucent and beef is cooked through (5-7 minutes).

Step 2 – Mix in Ingredients – Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, garlic powder, salt, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce and water.  

  • Step 3 – Boil Ingredients – Bring the mixture to a low boil. Cook for 4-5 minutes until the mixture has a sloppy Joe consistency.  Then remove the pan from the heat.
  • Step 4 – Heat Oven – Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9X13 baking pan with a non-stick cooking spray.
  • Step 5 – Cut Hawaiian Rolls – Cut the Hawaiian rolls in half lengthwise. Then place the bottom buns in the prepared baking dish.

Step 6 – Spread Sloppy Joe Sauce Mixture – Spread the beef mixture over the bottom of the rolls.

Step 7 – Then top with the shredded cheese.  The top with the other half of the rolls.

Step 8 – Brush Garlic Butter – Stir together the melted butter and garlic salt.  Brush this mixture over the top of the rolls.

Step 9 – Sprinkle the sesame seeds on top. 

  • Step 9 – Bake Sliders – Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 15-20 minutes in preheated oven.  Then remove the foil and bake for 2-5 minutes to brown the top of the Hawaiian rolls.
  • Step 10 – Serve and Enjoy – Remove from the oven and top with the chopped cilantro.  Let the sliders cool slightly.  Then serve warm with your favorite toppings and enjoy!

  • Cooking Sloppy Joe Mixture – After cooking the ground beef drain excess grease. Then add in the sauce ingredients. Allow the mixture to come to a boil to thicken the sauce.
  • Prepare Baking Dish – We recommend spraying the baking dish with cooking spray for easy clean up.
  • Baking Sliders – We recommend covering the sliders with aluminum foil while baking. Then remove the foil to brown the tops and allow the cheese to melt.

Can you Freeze Hawaiian Roll Sliders?

We do not recommend freezing these sliders. When thawing, the buns will be soggy and fall apart.
But you can freeze the cooked sloppy joe mixture and then make these sliders when you are ready to serve.

Can you Make ahead of Time?

These Hawaiian Rolls are best served after baking. If you make them to far in advance before serving then the rolls will get soggy.
If you need to prepare ahead of time, make the fully cooked meat mixture and refrigerate when cooled. Then when you are ready to serve, spread the mixture on the rolls, layer with cheese and bake.

Instructions

    This recipe is delicious, however I did tweak it a little and it turned out amazing. I only added a half cup of water instead of a whole. I added a tsp of apple cider vinegar and for the topping I used everything bagel seasoning! Just wanted to add post this incase someone else wants to try it!
