Every Thanksgiving we have to have the classic green bean casserole on the menu. I mean, is it really Thanksgiving without it?
However, I decided to try to make a crockpot green bean casserole recipe version, because I was tired of my oven being so full on the holidays. The results were perfection. If you prefer to use the Instant pot, we also have an Instant Pot Green Bean Casserole Recipe.

Why This Recipe Works

Variations Ideas
- Change the Cream of soup – If you’re not a cream of mushroom soup fan, switch it out for cream of chicken soup or cream of celery.
- Use Frozen or Fresh Green Beans – You can use fresh or frozen green beans. I do recommend that you let the frozen green beans thaw slightly before placing them in the crockpot. Otherwise, they tend to make the green bean casserole a little too watery.
- Make it Cheesy – Use canned cheddar soup in place of the cream of mushroom for a cheesy green bean casserole.
- Top with parmesan cheese – Parmesan cheese is a great addition to green bean casserole. Sprinkle about ½ cup on top when you top with the extra fried onions to jazz up this classic casserole.
- Add more Seasonings – I like to keep this recipe very simple with the ingredients. However black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, or even Worcestershire sauce are great additions to this easy recipe.
How to Make Crockpot Green Bean Casserole
Step 1. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soups, milk, salt and pepper. Mix well.
Step 2. Add in the green beans and ½ cup of the french fried onion. Gently Fold to combine.
Step 3. Spray your crock pot with non stick spray. Spread out the green bean in the pan.
Step 4. Add the lid and cook on low for 2-3 hours. You can also cook on high for 1 hour.
Step 5. Remove the lid and sprinkle with the remaining french fried onions and serve!
Recipe Tips
- Cooking Time – Since this is a crockpot recipe, it does have a little longer cooking time than traditional green bean casserole. Keep that in mind when you’re planning out your dishes.
- Prepping Casserole – I like to go ahead and prep and get this green bean casserole going first thing. If needed, you can always switch it to warm
- Double Recipe – This casserole dish will easily hold double the recipe (or even triple!) which makes it perfect when serving a crowd.
How Many Does this Serve?
This recipe can easily serve 8 people. However, it can also easily be doubled or tripled for the holidays to feed a crowd.
Can you Brown the Fried Onions?
I usually don’t mess with browning the fried onions but you definitely can if you prefer. There are 2 ways that you can brown the fried onions on top of this green bean casserole.
First, if you have an oven safe crock pot insert (with no plastic on it). You can remove the insert and broil the casserole for 2-3 minutes to brown the onions on top.
The second option is to brown the fried onions in a small amount of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Then place them on top of the casserole in the crock pot.
How to Store
If you have any leftovers, store them in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days.
It’s best reheat in the oven to make the fried onions crispy again but you can heat them up in the microwave as well.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, this can be made ahead of time. Mix together the ingredients in a bowl, cover and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
I prefer canned green beans in this recipe but you can easily use fresh or frozen. If fresh, make sure to trim them first. You will need approximately 3 cups of green beans and I would cook on low for 4-6 hours or on high for 3 hours until the beans are tender. Fresh or frozen green beans take longer to cook in a crock pot.
After the green bean casserole is done cooking you can keep this on warm for up to 3 hours. That makes this recipe great for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners.
If you find your casserole to be runnier than you’d like, remove the lid and cook for 30 minutes without the lid. That will help thicken the casserole.

Yes, it does for this recipe.
Does the cream of mushroom soup have to be condensed?
I would use about 2 pounds fresh green beans, trimmed.
If I want to use fresh green beans how much do you think I would need?
If you double the recipe, cook on low for 3-4 hours or on high for 1.5-2 hours until it cooked through to ensure that the inside of the casserole is cooked through.
If your crock pot liner is oven safe, remove the crock pot liner from the crock pot after the cook time and broil it uncovered for 3-5 minutes until the onions are crispy on top.
I would increase it by about an hour.
Question..Do I increase the cook time if I double or triple the recipe? Thank you!
Yes I think you could.
We don’t drink milk and I don’t want to buy any just for this one thing. Do you think I could sub with sour cream? Thanks 🙂
How long would you cook a double recipe?
What is I want my onions crispy?
I used fresh beans and they didn’t cook enough and were too crunchy and it was on the watery side. I think blanching them first would have been helpful.
Delicious and so easy to make in the crockpot!
