  • Shredded Cheese – Cheddar Cheese is delicious option but feel free to use what you prefer
  • Large Eggs – This adds the golden brown layer to the casserole
  • Whole Milk – I love mixing it in with my eggs for a creamier texture

Variations or Substitution Ideas

  • Change Sausage – Feel free to use the sausage flavor that you prefer or mix in chopped cooked bacon. We have even used leftover cooked chicken or turkey.
  • Bread – You can change the bread and mix in sourdough bread, hash browns or whole wheat bread. Use what you have.
  • Change Cheese – I love the flavor of the cheddar, but feel free to also use mozzarella, sharp cheddar cheese, swiss cheese, or colby jack cheese.
  • Vegetables – This breakfast casserole is delicious with the addition of veggies. We have added in spinach, fresh tomatoes, potatoes, cooked bell peppers, and slice mushrooms.

How to Make Paula Deen Breakfast Casserole

  • Step 1 – Spray the baking dish with a nonstick cooking spray. 
  • Step 2 – In a large skillet cook the sausage over medium-high heat stirring frequently until browned and crumbly. Drain off the excess grease in a paper towels lined plate.

Step 3 – Cut the crust off the bread and cut the bread pieces in half. In a single layer in the bottom of the dish cutting pieces.

Step 4 – Layer the top of the bread with cooked sausage crumbles.

Step 5 – Sprinkle 8-ounce of triple Cheddar Cheese on top of the cooked sausage.

Step 6 – Combine the eggs with the other ingredients in a large bowl. Pour mixture, then cover and refrigerate. Then bake the breakfast casserole uncovered then serve and enjoy.

Tips for Making the Perfect Breakfast Casserole

  • Uncover Casserole – We like to bake the casserole uncover so the top gets golden brown.
  • Refrigerate – One you have layered ingredients, allow the casserole to refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight.
  • Baking Time – Cooking time will vary for this breakfast casserole. You will know that the breakfast casserole is finished bake when the top is golden brown and the center is set. If the center is jiggly then you will need to finish baking.

Instructions

  • Spray a 9X13 baking pan with a non-stick cooking spray.
  • Brown the sausage in a skillet over medium high heat until crumbly and browned.  Drain off the excess grease.
  • Cut the crust off the bread and cut the bread pieces in half. Layer the bread slices in a single layer in the bottom of the baking dish.  Top the bread with the browned sausage and the shredded cheese.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, mustard, pepper and salt.  Pour this mixture over the cheese in the casserole pan.  Cover the dish and refrigerate for approximately 8 hours (overnight works great).
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.  Sit the casserole dish out at room temperature while the oven preheats.
  • Uncover the casserole and bake for 40 minutes until the top of the casserole is golden brown.  Let the casserole sit for 10 minutes and then it’s ready to serve and enjoy!
