What are Campfire Potatoes?
Campfire potatoes is another way to enjoy potatoes. The red potatoes are sliced and place in a piece of heavy duty aluminum foil topped with cheese and simple seasoning.
Campfire potatoes are a staple summertime side dish and we have also enjoyed them in the winter. They are quick and easy to make and clean up, so there is no reason not to enjoy them any day of the week.

Substitutions and Additions
- Worcestershire Sauce – Feel free to add in some Worcestershire sauce for added flavor.
- Onions – If you like onions, you can easily make campfire potatoes and onions for a delicious twist on this recipe. If some family members do not like onions, make a separate foil pack for them.
- Potatoes – We used red potatoes for this recipe. But you can use russet potatoes or yellow gold potatoes.
- Cheese – Add different cheese to the mixture. We used cheddar cheese and mozzarella, but pepper jack would also be a good option.
- Sausage – Add in some slice sausage for added flavor and protein.
How to Make Campfire Potatoes
- Step 1 – Prepare Foil – Spray 3 large pieces of foil with a non-stick cooking spray.
- Step 2 – Slice Potatoes – Slice the potatoes into thin slices and evenly divide them onto the pieces of foil.
- Step 3 – Season potatoes – Season the potatoes with salt and pepper. Then top each one with the diced bacon and green onions. Then top each one with thin slices of butter.
- Step 4 – Fold Foil – Fold the foil around the potatoes securely to make a foil pack.
- Step 5 – Grill Foil Packs – Place on a preheated grill over medium high heat or place on a campfire. Grill for 15-20 minutes until the potatoes are tender over medium heat.
- Step 6 – Open Foil Packs – Carefully open the foil packs. Evenly place the shredded cheese over the potatoes in the foil. Carefully close the foil packs back up and allow the steam from the potatoes to melt the cheese (approximately 2-3 minutes).
- Step 7 – Serve and Enjoy – Then the potatoes are ready to serve warm and enjoy.
Recipe Tips
- Heavy Duty Foil – We used heavy duty foil to make sure that it doesn’t break when cooking.
- Opening Foil Packs – After grilling the foil pack hot steam will come out when you open the foil. Just carefully open it to serve and enjoy.
- Cut Potatoes evenly – Make sure to cut the potatoes about the same size so they cook evenly. Thickness of the potatoes will depend on how long it takes to cook them.
How Long to Cook Campfire Potatoes
Campfire Potatoes can be cooked on the grill in about 15 minutes. It will depend on the type of potato that you use and the thickness of the potatoes. It is recommend that you cut the potatoes about the size so they cook evenly.
Once the potatoes have cooked tender, open the foil pack and top with cheese. Close foil and place back on the grill and cook for additional 2 minutes or until cheese is melted.
Campfire Potatoes in the Oven
Campfire Potatoes can easily be prepared in the oven. Prepare the potatoes as the recipe indicates and place in the foil pack. Place the potatoes in the oven preheated to 425 degrees. Bake the potatoes for about 10 minutes.
Once the potatoes are soft, top with cheese and place back in the oven. Bake for an additional 5 minutes or until cheese is melted.
The potatoes are now ready to serve and enjoy.

Campfire Potatoes
Ingredients
- 2 lbs Red Potatoes
- ½ teaspoon Salt
- ½ teaspoon Pepper
- 3 Tablespoons Butter
- ½ cup Mozzarella Cheese shredded
- 1 cup Cheddar Cheese shredded
- 6 slices Bacon cooked and chopped
- 3 Green Onions sliced
