Ingredients for Ocean Water
- Water – You can also use Coconut Water
- Sugar – Sonic uses coconut syrup which contains coconut and sugar. But regular sugar works to make it the perfect blend of sweetness.
- Coconut Extract – Gave the drink a tropical flavor. I buy mine on Amazon
- Blue Food Coloring – Adjust the coloring by adding more or less food coloring based on what you prefer.
- Sprite – Any lemon lime soda will work.

How to Make Sonic Ocean Water
Step 1 – Mix water and sugar – Combine water and sugar in a microwavable safe bowl. Make sure sugar dissolves. Microwave for 45 seconds and stir to create a simple syrup in a small microwave bowl.
Step 2 – Make the drink blue – Allow to cool completely. Add in the food coloring and coconut extract. Mix well. Add your syrup to cold Sprite and serve over ice.
Coconut Extract
This coconut flavoring extract is what pulls all the handful of ingredients together to make this drink. A little bit of this coconut extract goes along ways when adding to this non-alcoholic drink. So take it easy when adding to your drink; it is very strong.
You can always add more so start with 1 teaspoon and add more if you need it. We love coconut but we still have to be careful how much we add.
How to Serve Sonic Ocean Water
I’ve gotten a few questions on where you can buy the pretty straws and the fun lids to the mason jars. I actually bought them on Amazon:
- Striped Straws adding these straws makes them so fun and festive.
- The Flower Mason Jar Lids are also a great price. There are several on sale right now. We just love using these at parties.
- Serve Cold – Pour this delicious Sonic Ocean Water over ice for a refreshing drink. We have even doubled the recipe and served in a punch bowl.
- Make Slushie – We love slushies with this ocean water. Place the ocean water in a glass and place in the freezer. It will take about an hour and the results are a delicious slushie.
- Popsicles – If you have some popsicle molds, pour the ocean water into the molds. Allow the popsicles to freeze overnight. Surprise the kids with an afternoon treat.

Sorry, I haven’t tried that yet. If you do try it out, please let us know how it turns out!
I have a question. Have you ever used unflavored gelatin to turn this into their jello mix? I came across their jello mix at my local Walmart a few months back. All of the flavors were good but this one? There’s just something about it. It’s such a unique flavor. Unfortunately I can no longer find it at Walmart in store. I can however buy a 4pk of all the flavors for $13.99 which is INSANE!! That’s over $3 a box vs the $1.19 a box I paid for in store. If you have turned this recipe into a jello can you please share your recipe? My son LOVES all of the flavors but this one I’d say is both our favorite. Thanks and hope to hear back from you soon…
